Ramkumar, MD, MBA, wrote an article for Forbes published March 19, titled “Should Millennials Start Saving Money For Their Joint Replacement Now?” The article examines efforts by commercial and government payers to lower costs around joint replacement surgery, often one of the highest cost centers, by cutting into physician reimbursements. Dr. Ramkumar, a millennial surgeon, wonders if this trend will cause orthopaedic surgeons to pull out of payer-driven medicine and move to cash-based, fee-for-service payment models for joint replacements.
