Fellowship Education Improvement

and Innovation Grant Program

Program Overview

AAHKS has established the Fellowship Education Improvement and Innovation Program to award grant money to Adult Reconstruction Fellowship Programs, based on a grant received from Founding Industry PatronZimmer Biomet.

The grant program will incentivize the fellowship programs to address targeted areas of improvement, including but not limited to:

  • patient optimization
  • high risk/at risk patients
  • diverse patient populations
  • site of care impact
  • registry-based research
  • advanced technologies in joint arthroplasty

The grant program is intended to be flexible and inclusive. The long-term goal is to standardize curriculum, improve training and financially support adult reconstruction fellowship training nationally.

Application Requirements

Applications for the 2023-2024 fellowship training cycle are open January 18 – February 5, 2024. Applicant programs must have a current program agreement with AAHKS as well as an SF Match account.

Recipient programs and fellows must both summarize their progress or outcomes in brief reports at the end of the program year (or, in the program’s case, on next year’s application if seeking ongoing funding).

Reception of funds (and a complete application) requires the program to complete the AAHKS Fellowship Match Program Director and Coordinator Survey received at the end of the fellowship year.

The grant money shall not be utilized to sponsor or otherwise support recreational and/or entertainment activities or for any direct or indirect payments for faculty or attendee expenses such as honoraria, travel, lodging or meals.

For returning applicants, you will see most of last year’s information pre-populated in the form. For this cycle you will still need to complete the application for this year, updating all information as appropriate, and click submit.

A complete application will include the following requirements.

  1. Completed online application form
  2. Summary of how the program will implement FOCAL guidelines (300 words or less)
  3. Summary of how the grant will be used to improve fellow education (300 words or less)
  4. Completed AAHKS Fellowship Match Program Director and Coordinator Survey

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What can the grant funding be used for?

A. The grant is meant to be general and to allow for innovation in education, so AAHKS does not want to prescribe what the funds are used for. Acceptance of the grant monies would allow fellows to register for the AAHKS Annual Meeting, but to avoid regulatory issues and per the agreement with our industry partners, the funds cannot be specifically set aside for those travel expenses.

Q. Our first fellow at our program will not start until the 2024-2025 academic year. Do we have to wait until next year to apply for the grant?

A. Because the funds must be spent supporting fellows in the current academic year, if your program will not be training a fellow until next year’s cycle, your program would be ineligible to apply this academic year.
