Listen to AAHKS Amplified’s most recent podcast on increasing utilization of TJA by Black patients. Obinna O. Adigweme, MD, MS highlights an increasing problem in orthopaedics: the underutilization by Black patients in hip and knee replacements. Although TJA surgeries are proven to be highly effective procedures, Black patients undergo much fewer than white patients. Data shows that 70% of total joint replacement patients are white and only 5% are Black, which is highly disproportionate to U.S. demographics. In this podcast, Dr. Adigweme was joined by Muyibat A. Adelani, MD, Mary I. O’Connor, MD, Linda I. Suleiman, MD and Alison Brown, a former patient of his. This diverse panel came together to discuss reasons for the disparity between race and total joint replacement and how improvements can be made. Listen here, or wherever you download your podcasts.
