Dr. Pearl is the former CEO of The Permanente Medical Group, the nation’s largest medical group, overseeing 10,000 physicians and 38,000 staff responsible for the care of 5 million patients. Named one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 most influential physician leaders, Pearl spoke about how physicians can address burnout and what he calls “moral injury” to physicians. He discussed how technology can help improve traditional patient encounters and barriers within the economic system that run counter to providing that care. He called upon the physician community to lead disruption in health care by overcoming “what we’re used to” to embrace innovation, something in which he thinks “orthopaedic surgeons are leading the way.”
