AAHKS Clinical Research Award Study Seeks to use IORA Diclofenac to Improve Postoperative Pain Management in TKA
November 04, 2024 (Dallas, TX) – At the 2024 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting, a paper investigating the use of IORA Diclofenac to improve postoperative pain management in TKA, compared to intravenous (IV) Diclofenac was awarded the AAHKS Clinical Research Award. This award is given annually in recognition of outstanding clinical research in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty.
In this study, 46 patients (23 per group) undergoing primary TKA were enrolled in a double-blinded randomized controlled trial. The intervention group received 75mg IORA Diclofenac and IV normal saline placebo. The control group received 75mg IV Diclofenac and IO normal saline placebo. Both groups received standard protocol IORA Vancomycin.
Results indicated that the postoperative VAS-P scores were lower in the Intervention group compared to the Control group. The Intervention group also demonstrated reduced postoperative opioid consumption, reduced impact of pain on walking and sleeping, as well as improved patient satisfaction at two weeks postoperatively. In conclusion, this study showed that IORA Diclofenac demonstrates enhanced early postoperative pain relief, leading to reduced opioid consumption, alongside improved recovery post-anesthesia, less impact on early walking and sleeping ability, better early knee functionality and patient satisfaction.
Each year, I look forward to the AAHKS Annual Meeting as the premier forum for new research in arthroplasty, and without fail, I return home with new insights and ideas I can apply to my practice. The quality of the presentations is consistently superb, and we feel deeply honored to receive the AAHKS Clinical Research Award. Our paper on Intraosseous Regional Administration of Diclofenac in Total Knee replacement builds on a line of research that began over 12 years ago as a junior resident, and our team is extremely grateful to the colleagues, collaborators and friends who continue to advance this field. We extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to AAHKS for this award, and we look forward to presenting our findings at the Annual Meeting,” said Simon W. Young, FRACS, senior author on the paper.
