Bryan D. Springer, MD Takes Office as AAHKS President

March 23, 2022 (Chicago, IL) – Bryan D. Springer, MD took office as the 32nd President of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) during the AAHKS Board of Directors meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Springer is currently an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center in Charlotte, NC, where he serves as Fellowship Director and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Atrium Musculoskeletal Institute. He completed medical school at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, followed by his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Mayo Clinic and his fellowship in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee at Harvard School of Medicine/Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Springer has gone on to acquire multiple academic, leadership and professional awards, that include membership in The Hip Society and The Knee Society, Chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) Steering Committee and President of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS). His academic and clinical interests focus on complex primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty in addition to managing infection in total joint arthroplasty.

With all his professional accomplishments, Dr. Springer manages to include philanthropy work by serving as the co-founder and Medical Director of Operation Walk Carolinas – an all-volunteer medical humanitarian organization that provides the gift of mobility through life-changing joint replacement surgeries provided to patients globally at no cost to them. In 2019, Dr. Springer led a mission of 50 providers in Panama, performing 60 total hip and knee replacements on 54 patients. “The reason that we go to great lengths to travel to these countries and do this work is because of outcomes like we experienced in Panama – patients who couldn’t walk before surgery are now mobile and able to work, spend time with their families, provide for those families, and do the things they love,” said Dr. Springer.

As a member of AAHKS since 2007, Dr. Springer has served as Chair of the Education and Communications Council, the 2013 Program Chair, Associate Editor for Arthroplasty Today and as a board member for the Foundation for Arthroplasty Research and Education (FARE), among other appointments.
