Study Examines Safety of Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty

A study presented at the 2020 AAHKS Annual Meeting last month investigated whether there is a population of total knee arthroplasty patients in which bilateral total knee arthroplasty (BTKA) can be safely performed. Authors compared 30-day mortality and complication rates between more than 8,200 BTKA and unilateral TKA patients. It found BTKA had an increased risk for complications when compared to UTKA regardless of health status, even in the healthiest patients, and found that there was no difference in mortality between BTKA and UTKA.
